Our Products
BioSak Compostable Bags & Film

W. Ralston is the original pioneer in the development of the new and growing market for certified compostable bioplastics in Canada. In recognizing that the marketplace was demanding new solutions for food waste disposal management, we were the first Canadian company to produce certified compostable bags. This material, marketed under the Biosak brand, facilitates the collection of organic waste and is now sold through traditional retail outlets from coast-to-coast.

We have also launched an industrial line of Biosak bags, packed in large quantities, for use in the growing Institutional, Commercial and Food service marketplaces.

All these compostable products are certified by both Canada’s BNQ certification program and by the BPI Biodegradable Product Institute. Biosak meets all the requirements of ASTM D6400-04 and the BNQ 0017-088.

Tips on Using BioSak

  • We have been working with retailers and your local municipality to help promote the green bin program in your community. Your participation in the green bin program is vital to the successful diversion of waste from landfill.
  • This information is intended to help you to understand the performance characteristics of our BIOSAK® Compostable Bags for Kitchen Waste.
  • It is important to recognize that these bags are not intended to duplicate the performance of a regular plastic bag. They are Certified Compostable Plastic products designed to line the green bins and containers to help keep those containers clean. The final goal is for the bags to become compost.
  • Your municipality requires that you use only Certified Compostable bags that carry this approved symbol of compostable certification.
  • Beware of imitation
  • You will find the symbol printed on our bags and the packaging they are sold in.
  • Other so called biodegradable or compostable bags do not break down into compost. Those non-certified bags contaminate the compost with plastic film, reducing the value and useful applications for the compost.
  • If the packaging and bags are not printed with the certification, then the bags are not compostable and are not approved for use in your municipality.
  • Our BIOSAK® Compostable Bags are made with a new generation of BIO-PLASTIC derived from corn, a renewable resource. Our BIOSAK® Compostable Bags are made with a new generation of Mater-Bi® BIO-PLASTIC. Mater-Bi® is the first family of bioplastics that use vegetable components, such as cornstarch, that have been modified (or complexed) with biodegradable polyesters.
